The Global House Of Music Eisteddfod has been created to incorporate more performance experience in the youth of today.

Have you ever played in an eisteddfod? If you haven’t, now’s your chance! An eisteddfod is a weirdly-named musical performance where you get to play for an audience and receive advice from a judge. Our GHM eisteddfod is opening soon! It’s open to all ages and levels, and you can submit your entry online. And like any eisteddfod, there will be winners! So, without further ado, here’s everything you need to know about the best online eisteddfod in Johannesburg!

What are the categories?

There are two main sections: Classical and Contemporary. Then, there are subcategories for the instruments:

  • piano/keyboard
  • strings (violin, cello, double bass)
  • woodwind (flute, clarinet, oboe, recorder, saxophone)
  • brass (trumpet, trombone, horn)
  • guitar
  • vocals (all voices)

So, the first step is to choose your main category (Classical or Contemporary), and then your instrument. And there are no restrictions on which instruments can enter which category: it’s all up to you! This means that you can enter either category with any instrument. Perhaps you play the cello, but you want to play a contemporary song? No problem!

What will I get?

Once you upload performance video, our very own Dr Christo Jankowitz will watch and evaluate your performance. Then, he’ll compile a report with feedback to let you know how you did and how you could improve. This report will focus mainly on four aspects of your playing:

  • posture
  • accuracy
  • style
  • character

This is a chance for you to get direct feedback from a university lecturer and well-known South African performer. You can even use the eisteddfod to get some practice performing your exam pieces!

How to enter Johannesburg’s best online eisteddfod

To take part, upload your video through our online portal. We’ll make this available when entries are open and notify you if you’re on our mailing list. If you aren’t, be sure to sign up using the form below. We’ll also share a video tutorial on how to submit recordings. It’s that simple!

If you really wow Dr Jankowitz, you’ll be able to play at our GHM Gala Award Ceremony. Here, our most promising students will get to perform their pieces for a live audience and even win prizes. A panel of judges will decide the overall GHM Eisteddfod Winner. We’ll also feature the winners on our website and social media page.
